The department of surgery , North Shore Hospital has general surgeons who are specialised in the areas of colorectal, upper GI, melanoma, head and neck, breast and oncology. The surgeons participate in sponsored clinical research and University led research from various institutions both nationally and worldwide. The surgeons also self-initiate their own research studies, generate patient registries, and participate in bio banking. North shore Hospital is also a teaching hospital which encourages and supports registrars, medical students and fellows to initiate their own research. Research practices at this institution are facilitated with a variety of departments including pathology, radiology, laboratory and pharmacy. The hospital has a research and knowledge centre called Awhina which guides all research projects and assesses for locality approval. Part of this approval is Maori review of all projects which must also be approved. The department also employs two surgical research nurse specialists who are responsible for coordinating studies.

The research nurse specialists are certified in mandatory Good Clinical Practice (GCP). They have years of experience and expertise with online forms/HDEC for research submissions and approvals, annual updates and amendments. The nurses have certification and experience in many electronic data systems such as Inform and Redcap. The coordination of studies includes patient safety and confidentiality, data collection/maintenance and archiving, clinical activities including drug administration, and assisting in writing protocols, information sheets, questionnaires, informed consent forms, ANZCTR registration etc.
